Researching Restaurant Companies

The National Restaurant Association offers the following list of resources that you can use to conduct research on specific restaurant companies. Association members looking for more information can contact their Information Service & Library.

Hoover's Online
Hoover's provides a wealth of data on tens of thousands of companies. Basic information is available for free; longer profiles are available to subscribers. Check out Hoover's
restaurant category.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's EDGAR
EDGAR offers data on publicly traded companies, including annual 10-K reports. Check out filings by eating places.

Chain Store Guide
Chain Store Guide produces two directories annually -- the Directory of Chain Restaurant Operators and the Directory of High Volume Independent Restaurants. Each provides information on such topics as key personnel, sales volume, average check size, and contact information.

Nation's Restaurant News
This weekly newsmagazine produces an annual special report (usually in June/July) tracking the top 100 restaurant chains as well as the second 100 chains. Available for a fee.

Restaurant Hospitality
Restaurant Hospitality, a monthly magazine, profiles the top 100 restaurant chains. Available for a fee.

Restaurant Business
Restaurant Business magazine provides an annual list of the top 50 Growth Chains and the Top 50 Franchises. It also produces an annual Restaurant Growth Index (RGI), a statistical prediction of where a new restaurant stands the best chance of succeeding. Available by subscription.

Restaurants and Institutions
Restaurant and Institutions magazine produces an annual list of the top 400 restaurant concepts, an annual list of the top 100 Independent restaurants, and an annual list of the most popular chains based on a consumer survey. Available by subscription.
